HANOVER PARK – Playing doubles together was a plan hatched their freshman year, but Prairie Ridge’s Allison Murphy and Carolyn Huerth never imagined that it would produce a girls tennis state championship.

HANOVER PARK – Rain led to a change in plans on the opening day of the IHSA Girls Tennis Tournament, and the Prairie Ridge doubles team of Allison Murphy and Carolyn Huerth took advantage.
After a solid regular season capped off with a doubles championship at the Cary-Grove Girls Tennis Sectional, Prairie Ridge’s Allison Murphy and Carolyn Huerth were hoping for a 5-8 seed at the IHSA State Finals.
CARY – Six of the 12 local players who qualified for the IHSA Girls Tennis State Tournament from the Cary-Grove Sectional on Saturday will head to state for the first time.
CRYSTAL LAKE – Prairie Ridge won three out of the four doubles titles on the final day of the Fox Valley Conference girls tennis tournament Monday to win the team championship for the sixth consecutive year.
CRYSTAL LAKE – Crystal Lake Central’s Nelle Youel breezed through the opening day of the Fox Valley Conference Girls Tennis Tournament at No. 1 singles, losing only four games in four matches.
WOODSTOCK – Andrew Hull made five saves in goal to record his ninth shutout this season in Marian Central’s 5-0 win against Vernon Hills in non-conference boys soccer action Monday.
NILES – Elise and Kayla Beattie finished first and second, respectively, Saturday at the 36th annual Pat Savage Cross Country Invitational, leading Woodstock to a second-place finish with 61 points.
WOODSTOCK – Elise and Kayla Beattie finished first and second for Woodstock’s girls cross country team Tuesday in the four-team Woodstock Mega Meet at Emricson Park.
HARVARD – The Harvard girls volleyball team won its own invitational on Saturday with a 5-0 record.
CRYSTAL LAKE – The back of her sweatshirt read “Mrs. Federer,” but the way Crystal Lake Central’s Nelle Youel played Saturday, Roger Federer might need a shirt with “Mr. Youel” on the back.
CHICAGO – Alden-Hebron’s Sig Finley did exactly as his coach told him.
CARY– It’s been a slow progression this season for Cary-Grove’s Beth Hughes to return to the form that earned her an IHSA state berth last year as a freshman.
CRYSTAL LAKE – The Prairie Ridge girls volleyball team survived a close first set, 25-21, then prevailed in the second set, 25-14, to beat the Johnsburg Skyhawks on Thursday and remain undefeated in the Fox Valley Conference Fox Division.
CRYSTAL LAKE – Crystal Lake South’s girls volleyball team outlasted Huntley, 25-21, 25-20, in Fox Valley Conference Valley Division play Tuesday to remain undefeated in the division.
McHENRY – Prairie Ridge’s boys golf team defeated Johnsburg, 160-161, on Monday at Chapel Hill in a Fox Valley Conference dual meet with an ironic twist.
ROCKFORD – The Crystal Lake South girls tennis team used its depth to take home the Guilford Invitational championship Saturday. The Gators won the championship with 39 points, beating second-place Woodstock (25) by 14 points.
McHENRY – McHenry’s girls volleyball team gave Huntley a scare, but the Red Raiders proved to be too much Thursday in a three-set Fox Valley Conference Valley Division victory.
CRYSTAL LAKE – Allison Murphy and Carolyn Huerth made a statement for Prairie Ridge on Monday that they are no longer singles players playing doubles but a doubles team with which to be reckoned.

DeKALB – Hampshire’s girls volleyball team continued its winning ways Saturday by claiming the DeKalb Invitational title with a 4-0 record.
BULL VALLEY – Stephanie Pettit’s 7-over-par 42 was the low round for the Marian Central girls golf team, which shot a 187 to beat McHenry (195) and Larkin (283) in a non-conference triangular Thursday at Boone Creek.
BULL VALLEY – The McHenry girls golf team used its overall depth to defeat Huntley, 200-201, in a tight Fox Valley Conference match Wednesday at Boone Creek.
ALGONQUIN – Lindsey Gardeck and Kassy Bernardo led the Jacobs doubles’ contingent that proved to be the difference Tuesday against Woodstock in a Fox Valley Conference girls tennis match.
CARY – Cary-Grove’s volleyball team got a glimpse Thursday of what it might see this weekend at the Jacobs Golden Eagle Volleyball Invitational.
GENOA CITY, Wis. – The Hampshire girls golf team continued its strong start to the season Wednesday at Nippersink as the defending Big Northern Conference champs beat Richmond-Burton, 204-224, in conference play.
CARY – Crystal Lake South girls tennis coach Don Nead is experimenting with his lineup, and so far it’s working.
McHENRY – Danielle Roulo shot a 9-over-par 44 on Monday to lead Prairie Ridge’s girls golf team to a 179-208 Fox Valley Conference victory against McHenry at Boone Creek.
ROCKFORD – Marian Central’s boys soccer team started finding the back of the net Friday against Dixon in the Rockford Auburn Tournament.

GRAYSLAKE – McHenry started the boys soccer season with a 4-2 non-conference win against Grays-lake Central on Monday.
Fox Valley
CRYSTAL LAKE – Sam Sweeney made it four-in-a-row at the McHenry County Tennis Classic, defeating John Cincola, 6-4, 2-6, 6-3, on Sunday in the men’s open championship.
One of the first lessons Jake Goebbert has learned about professional baseball is geography.
CRYSTAL LAKE – Huntley’s baseball team has relied on pitching throughout the Fox Valley Conference Fox Division season, and Tuesday’s 3-1 win against Crystal Lake Central was no different.
