CARY – Going undefeated in any sport is no easy accomplishment.

Crystal Lake South sophomore Nick Robles normally wouldn’t consider a round of 6-over-par 78 acceptable, but given the weather conditions Friday for the first round of the IHSA Class 3A Boys Golf State Tournament, he wasn’t complaining.
ST. CHARLES – Coming into the IHSA Class 2A West Chicago Sectional at Pheasant Run, golfers knew the competition for the top two team spots needed to qualify for the state tournament would be stiff.
LAKE BLUFF – On the inside, there were nerves and anxiety to be sure, fueled by the memories of last year’s unsuccessful sectional.
PRAIRIE GROVE – Crystal Lake Central’s Riley Bauman wasn’t thrilled by his 6-over-par 78 on Tuesday, but he wasn’t displeased, either.
CRYSTAL LAKE – There’s nothing like being in a must-win situation to get a team’s attention.
HARVARD – Shortly after the final group of players headed into the clubhouse Tuesday at Oak Grove Golf Course, rain and shifting winds gave way to sunshine and a gentle breeze.
NILES – Woodstock’s J.D. Fuller and Phil Meyer finished first and second, respectively, Saturday at the 36th annual Pat Savage Cross Country Invitational.
HARVARD – Cary-Grove’s boys’ golf team couldn’t have cut it any closer.
POPLAR GROVE – Hampshire senior Grant Yoder knew what to do playing in less-than-ideal conditions.
HARVARD – Crystal Lake South’s boys golf team achieved a rare feat in its 156-170 Fox Valley Conference win against Woodstock on Tuesday at Plum Tree National.
MARENGO – With matches against Burlington Central and Cary-Grove looming this week, Hampshire’s girls volleyball team easily could have looked past Marengo on Monday.
WOODSTOCK – Playing in adverse weather conditions can wreak havoc on a golfer's game, and with winds gusting more than 30 mph at Crystal Woods on Monday, Marian Central's boys golf team was competing not only against Grayslake Central, but against the elements, too.
FOX LAKE – Ian Sanchez ran a time of 15:57 to win Grant’s James “J.T.” Taylor Invitational on Saturday at Camp Henry Horner and lead Richmond-Burton to a second-place finish at the 12-team cross country meet.
CHICAGO – Alden-Hebron’s Sig Finley did exactly as his coach told him.
CRYSTAL LAKE – The Prairie Ridge boys soccer team overcame a 2-1 halftime deficit Tuesday by scoring four second-half goals to defeat Woodstock, 5-3, and remain perfect in the Fox Valley Conference Fox Division.
McHENRY – Prairie Ridge’s boys golf team defeated Johnsburg, 160-161, on Monday at Chapel Hill in a Fox Valley Conference dual meet with an ironic twist.
WEST DUNDEE – In a matchup of two of the top three boys golf teams in the Fox Valley Conference from a year ago, Jacobs proved its elite status by edging Crystal Lake South,
HUNTLEY – Taylor Pignataro scored a goal and added an assist Thursday, and Jacobs defeated Huntley, 3-1, in a key Fox Valley Conference Valley Division boys soccer match.
HARVARD – The Harvard boys golf team earned its first win of the season Wednesday with a 198-224, non-conference win against Round Lake at Plum Tree National.
CRYSTAL LAKE – Alberto Ocampo scored the lone goal for the Prairie Ridge boys soccer team Tuesday in the Wolves’ 1-0 victory gainst Johnsburg in Fox Valley Conference Fox Division play.
CARY – Cary-Grove’s boys golf team put together an impressive team performance Monday, shooting a collective 1-under-par 147 at Cary Country Club for an 11-stroke Fox Valley Conference win against Prairie Ridge.
ROCKFORD – Jacobs’ Scott Cahill shot a 1-under-par 71 on Saturday to tie for first place at the Rockford East Brad Frowler Invitational at Aldeen.
McHENRY – Crystal Lake Central’s boys golf team came into the season with expectations of being one of the elite teams in the Fox Valley Conference.
BULL VALLEY – The McHenry girls golf team used its overall depth to defeat Huntley, 200-201, in a tight Fox Valley Conference match Wednesday at Boone Creek.
LAKEWOOD – Crystal Lake Central’s Riley Bauman shot a 4-under-par 32 on Tuesday to tie the school record for nine holes and lead the Tigers to a Fox Valley Conference win against Huntley at Turnberrry.
WAUCONDA – The Wauconda Soccer Invitational will have two McHenry County teams playing in its championship game Saturday as Huntley and Marian Central both won their semifinal matches Thursday.
WEST DUNDEE – Scott Cahill shot a 4-under-par 32 to lead Jacobs’ boys golf team to a 157-172 win at Randall Oaks against Dundee-Crown in Fox Valley Conference play Wednesday.
WAUCONDA – Marian Central’s boys soccer team started on the right foot in the Wauconda Tournament on Tuesday with a 3-1 opening-round win against Zion-Benton.
McHENRY – Danielle Roulo shot a 9-over-par 44 on Monday to lead Prairie Ridge’s girls golf team to a 179-208 Fox Valley Conference victory against McHenry at Boone Creek.
GRAYSLAKE – McHenry started the boys soccer season with a 4-2 non-conference win against Grays-lake Central on Monday.
BYRON – Johnsburg’s boys golf team hopes to be one of the bigger surprises in the Fox Valley Conference this season.

Here we go! The prep season has already started for our local golfers, and every other sport pretty much kicks off next week. Time has finally come to see who has been workin’ hard over the summer and which teams’ early preparation will give them a good start to their season.
Laughlin leads C-G to boys golf victory

The 2008 boys golf season saw the emergence of Crystal Lake South’s Nick Robles and the success of Crystal Lake Central’s team, which made it downstate and finished eighth. As the 2009 season gets under way this week, here are a few story lines to watch for.
PRAIRIE GROVE – Cary-Grove and Prairie Ridge (314 points) tied for third place in the Prairie Ridge Early Bird Tournament at Prairie Isle to open the boys golf season Monday.
McHENRY – After competing against one another individually all summer, McHenry County Junior Golf Association members played together in a team competition in the final event of the season Friday at Boone Creek.
HARVARD – Nick Robles headed into Thursday’s McHenry County Junior Golf Association’s Tournament of Champions at Oak Grove needing to shoot the day’s low round to win the junior boys division Player of the Year title.
McHENRY – Transitioning from high school to college athletics can be difficult, and former McHenry High School golfer Jimmy Van Fleet is making a conscious effort this summer to prepare for the change.
LAKEWOOD – Rylee Billings had one more chance to build momentum heading into the McHenry County Junior Golf Association Tournament of Champions.
HARVARD – Ryan Laughlin came into the McHenry County Junior Golf Association Plum Tree Open on Wednesday having scored no points in any of the previous MCJGA events this summer.
ROCKFORD – Cary’s Ryan Laughlin shot a 1-over-par 73 on Tuesday in the final round of the Mid-American Junior Golf Tour’s 36-hole Rockford Classic at Aldeen to finish tied for third at 4-over 148. Laughlin was tied for ninth after a 75 in Monday’s first round.
LAKEWOOD – Monday’s Illinois Junior Golf Association event at Turnberry Country Club presented local golfers with a unique challenge: competing over 36 holes instead of the customary 18 played at most IJGA events.
WOODSTOCK – When Luke Waggoner walked to the 10th tee to start his round Wednesday at the McHenry County Junior Golf Association Crystal Woods Open, he was met by a surprise.
HARVARD – The Illinois State Amateur Championship is a test for the state’s best amateur golfers and generally attracts top college-age and older players. On Monday, Cary-Grove High School’s Ryan Laughlin proved that he had the game to earn his way into the prestigious tournament.
