Athlete of the Week
The Golden Eagles guard scored a game-high 18 points to lead his team past McHenry, 53-50, on Wednesday in a Fox Valley Conference Valley Division game.
Jacobs (6-6 overall, 2-0 FVC Valley) got a big boost from its 6-foot-1 point guard in the second quarter when Orange scored 11. He hit all three field-goal attempts in that quarter, one for a 3-pointer, and was 4 for 4 at the free-throw line.
Twice in that quarter, Orange showed how tough he is to stop by rebounding on the defensive end and driving all the way to the other end to score at the rim.
Orange also scored on a driving basket with 1:15 to go that gave Jacobs a three-point lead.
Big win for Warriors: McHenry was thrilled at its 58-57 victory against Crystal Lake South on Friday at West Campus. The Warriors dropped a close game on the road, 53-50, at Jacobs two days earlier, but came back to knock off the Gators.
“Coming in, on paper, South is probably as good – if not better – than anybody in our conference,” McHenry coach Tim Paddock said. “And whenever you get a chance to beat a top team and win a game at home, you're going to be in the hunt.”
South, after an 8-0 start, figures to be a factor in the FVC Valley race, but Gators coach Matt LePage knows his team needs every win it can get.
“Road conference games are so hard and if you can steal a win, it’s such a bonus in the race for the [division],” LePage said. “We had a chance and so it's tough to swallow because we played well enough to win.”
Get them next time: Richmond-Burton lost to Burlington Central, 70-46, in a matchup of two of the perennial Big Northern Conference East Division contenders on Friday. Both teams have one loss with a long way to go, but the regular-season finale between them at R-B’s Lou Ramirez Gymnasium likely will have division title meaning.
“It seems like we have one close game with B.C. and they drill us in the other one,” R-B coach Brandon Creason said. “I don’t know what it is, they always drill us one of the two.”
That could bode well for the next meeting, but the Rockets have a lot to take care of between now and then.
