Inside girls basketball: Jazza Johns named Athlete of the Week

Athlete of the Week

Jazza Johns

Johnsburg, so., forward

Johns scored 14 points in Johnsburg’s Fox Valley Conference Fox Division win against Woodstock on Friday. For an encore on Saturday, the sophomore forward scored a game-high 23 points and grabbed 16 rebounds to lead the Skyhawks to a 58-57 nonconference win against St. Viator.

Noteworthy

Johns bolsters Skyhawks: With the addition of sophomore forward Jazza Johns to the Johnsburg lineup, the Skyhawks have gotten a boost on the court.

Johns gives the Skyhawks another formidable presence in the post to pair with junior forward Trace Chase. Together, Johns and Chase are two of the best scoring duo in the area. Against Woodstock on Friday, Johns’ athleticism and length gave the Blue Streaks problems whenever Johnsburg utilized the diamond press.

“That gives us a whole new look when we have almost two 6-footers underneath and then you can kick it out to our [shooters],” Johnsburg coach Brad Frey said.

Game rescheduled: The cold weather forced area schools to close Monday and Tuesday, which also meant all activities and games were cancelled.

The Crystal Lake Central-Prairie Ridge Fox Valley Conference crossover game, originally scheduled for Monday, is rescheduled for 2:30 p.m. on Feb. 1 at Prairie Ridge.

Weather layoff impacts preparation: Fox Valley Conference divisional play resumes Wednesday, but most teams will not have had much preparation heading into their respective games.

A three-day break heading into Wednesday’s games could lead to some sloppy games. But Huntley coach Steve Raethz believes his team will be prepared for its game at McHenry after implementing some of the gameplan last week.

“It’s something that we’re just going to have to deal with,” Raethz said. “We have a team meeting [Wednesday] to go over some things in regards to McHenry, but we’re just going to have to go out and play.”
