Woodstock girls upset Johnsburg

WOODSTOCK – With a 51-48 victory against Johnsburg, the Woodstock girls basketball team not only upset the Skyhawks, but the Blue Streaks shook up the Fox Valley Conference Fox Division in the process.

The Skyhawks (17-6 overall, 7-1 FVC Fox) suffered their first loss of the conference season after they were outscored, 18-10, in the fourth quarter. Johnsburg had led, 38-33, after three.

Woodstock senior forward Abby Haubold scored eight of her 10 points in the fourth quarter, and guard Chrissy Velasquez scored a team-high 19 points for the Streaks (7-12, 2-4).

“We go into every game expecting to win, and this one was no different,” Woodstock coach Marty Hammond said. “We picked up our defensive pressure and drove hard to the basket.”

The Skyhawks were without guard Melissa Dixon (back spasms) and forward Danielle Slivka (knee). Guard Megan Lopez sprained a finger on her shooting hand and didn’t play in the second half.

Senior guard Chandler Sommerfeldt and forward Krista Volden (fouled out) each scored 12 points for Johnsburg.

Cary-Grove 51, Dundee-Crown 20: At Cary, junior forward Claire Jakubicek scored 15 points for the Trojans in their FVC Valley win against the Chargers. Senior forward Lizzy Dyrek added 14 for C-G (20-1, 6-0 FVC Valley). Megan Fasanella scored eight points for D-C (2-17, 0-6).

Hampshire 66, Harvard 26: At Hampshire, Chrissy Heine had a double-double (16 points, 10 assists) against Big Northern Conference East Division rival Harvard to help keep the Whip-Purs (17-0, 4-0 BNC East) unbeaten. Ashley Crosby led the Hornets (4-17, 0-6) with seven points.

Antioch 71, Richmond-Burton 63: At Antioch, the Rockets (9-10) lost in non-conference action, despite Nikki Zaobidny’s 19 points. Tracy Holian hit three three-pointers for R-B.

Alden-Hebron 45, Berean Baptist 24: At Hebron, Hayli Lagerhausen and Nora VanderPal each scored 10 points to lead A-H (6-12) to a non-conference win.

BOYS BASKETBALL

Stillman Valley 65, Marengo 55: At Stillman Valley, Austin Brettschneider scored 16 points, Collin Brettschneider had 14 and Zach Lundquist added 13 for Marengo (2-15) in a BNC crossover loss.

Alden-Hebron 51, Berean Baptist 48: At Rockford, Jared Hilton scored 18 points, and Shane Engelbrecht had 16 as the Giants (5-14) won a non-conference game.

BOYS SWIMMING

Gurnee Warren 118, Cary-Grove 65: At Gurnee, C-G’s Mike Hamann won the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 49.66 seconds and the 100 backstroke in 56.60.

BOYS BOWLING

Huntley 2,941, Woodstock North 2,712: At Bowl-Hi Lanes in Huntley, Dylan Rehner had a 669 series for Huntley (7-8). Jamie Hagen had a 686 series and a 285 high game for the Thunder.

GIRLS BOWLING

Woodstock North 2,462, Huntley 2,097: At Wayne’s Lanes in Woodstock, Lynea Steig led the Thunder to a win with a 593 series that included a 226 game. Amy Antczak had a team-high 550 series for Huntley.
