A-H girls rally for OT win

HEBRON – Outscoring Westminster Christian by eight points in the fourth quarter Thursday, the Alden-Hebron girls basketball team forced overtime and won its Northeastern Athletic Conference game, 44-37.

“It’s nice to win a close game for once,” Giants coach Tim Hovanec said. “We’ve struggle finishing games out, but tonight was a pleasant surprise.

“The girls hit some key free throws in overtime, forced some turnovers and hurried a lot of shots by [Westminster].”

Junior center-forward Hayli Lagerhausen and forward Amanda Appner led A-H (5-11 overall, 2-2 NAC) with 13 points each. Appner also hit two three-point field goals.

Grayslake North 58, Woodstock 48: At Grayslake, the Knights defeated the Blue Streaks for the first time, in Fox Valley Conference Fox Division action. Woodstock (6-11, 1-2) was led by senior guard Tawnee Vermett’s 19 points and guard Chrissy Velasquez’s 18.

Hampshire 66, Rockford Lutheran 34: At Hampshire, the Whip-Purs won their Big Northern Conference crossover against the Crusaders to remain undefeated on the season. Junior forward Alex Dumoulin led Hampshire (15-0) with 17 points, and guard Jessica VanDorin (15 points) connected on five three-pointers.

WRESTLING

Marian Central 45, Hampshire 18: At Woodstock, the Hurricanes got pins from Austin Sabella (135 pounds), Tim Skelton (145), Mike Pappas (160) and Jared Koch (171) in their non-conference dual against the Whip-Purs. Nathan Sorg (215) had the lone pin for Hampshire.

CL South 59, Jacobs 10: At Crystal Lake, the Gators registered seven pins and lost in only two weight classes in their FVC crossover win against the Golden Eagles. Aaron Ryan (119) had a major decision for Jacobs.

McHenry 46, Cary-Grove 18: At McHenry, Conor Infelise (130) had a major decision in the Tigers’ FVC Valley victory. Josh Nelson (145) had the lone pin for the Trojans.

CL Central 59, Grayslake North 18: At Crystal Lake, the Tigers registered five pins in their FVC Fox victory.

BOYS SWIMMING

Harlem Triangular: At Machesney Park, Woodstock-Woodstock North co-op finished in second place with 107 points. Sterling won with 120 points, and Harlem (94) finished third. Woodstock-Woodstock North’s Dylan Peterson won the 50-yard freestyle in 24.24 seconds, and Peterson, Trevor Nomm, Ben Shearer and Zach Zankle took second place in the 400 freestyle relay (3:45.77).

BOYS BOWLING

Huntley 2,416, Libertyville 2,321: At Lakeside Lanes in Algonquin, Dylan Rehner bowled a 627 high series and a 215 high game to lead Huntley (6-8).

GIRLS BOWLING

Jacobs 2,519, Huntley 2,182: At Brunswick Zone in Huntley, Gianna Scarpelli bowled a 576 high series to lead the Golden Eagles in a win against the Red Raiders.
