Marian soccer wins Rockford tournament

ROCKFORD – Marian Central’s boys soccer team started finding the back of the net Friday against Dixon in the Rockford Auburn Tournament.

Saturday, the goals kept coming, as the Hurricanes went 3-0 on the day to win the 20-team tournament. Marian (6-0) defeated Crystal Lake Central, 4-0, and Rock Island, 7-2, earlier in the day before beating Rock Island Alleman, 5-1, in the championship game. Tyler Lundquist scored five goals on the day, including three against Crystal Lake Central.

“Tyler [Lundquist] didn’t get off to a great start [Friday] night but [Saturday] we had outstanding possession of the ball,” Marian coach Mike Golda said. “It was the best I have seen in my five years here at Marian.”

Crystal Lake Central (3-2-1) finished third. The Tigers needed to win by more than three goals and get a shutout in their first game of the day to win their pool, and Central defeated Sterling, 6-0, behind Sam Kruse’s three goals.

After losing in the semifinals to Marian, the Tigers defeated Harlem, 3-1, to earn third place. Kruse scored twice, and Tyler Fehring also scored. Tom Breen earned the win in goal, making two saves.

Woodstock went 0-2 on the day including a 4-3 loss to Winnebago.

Christian Harvey scored twice for the Blue Streaks (1-4).

Colin Smith Invitational: At Stillman Valley, Marengo went 1-2 at the invitational, defeating Rockford Lutheran, 8-0, and losing to Hinckley-Big Rock, 2-1, and Byron, 1-0, in the consolation final.

Quincy Tournament: McHenry had a tie and a win Saturday, rallying from 1-0 halftime deficits each game, to finish the two-day tournament with a 1-1-1 record.

McHenry tied Geneva, 2-2, with Dylan Clohessy and Josh McNaughton scoring. Goalkeeper Taylor Halm made eight saves.

The Warriors (3-2-1) then beat Kirksville, Mo., 2-1, behind goals by Jake Bukiri and McNaughton. Halm and Alex Birkle split time in goal.

BOYS GOLF

Grant Bulldog Invitational: At Antioch Golf Club, Tyler Chambers shared medalist honors with a 13-over-par 84 to lead Johnsburg to a one-stroke win with a 343 at the seven-team invitational.

Also for the Skyhawks, Jake Gasior and Jake Arden both shot 85s.

Eric Buckley shot 90 to lead Richmond-Burton, which finished sixth (435).

Maine West was second with 344.

McHenry Invitational: At Oak Grove in Harvard, Casey Schneider shot an 11-over 82 to lead Prairie Ridge (342) to a fourth-place finish in the nine-team event. Boylan (316) won the tournament.

Nick Robles shot a 79 to lead Crystal Lake South (343) to sixth place, and Riley Bauman’s 78 gave Crystal Lake Central (343) a seventh-place finish. Willy Stastny had an 81 for McHenry (355), which finished eighth.

GIRLS VOLLEYBALL

Wheaton North Invitational: Emma Hussey had 18 kills and seven blocks to lead Marian Central to a second-place finish.

The Hurricanes lost to Oak Forest in the championship match in three sets, 25-23, 22-25, 27-25, and defeated Buffalo Grove and Andrew in straight sets.

Also for the Hurricanes (4-2), Dena Ott had 23 digs, and Mary Kate Manning recorded 17 kills and 11 blocks.

GIRLS TENNIS

Schaumburg Invitational: Abbey Kolarczyk and Stephanie Brunetti won the No. 1 doubles championship at the eight-team invitational to lead Crystal Lake South (31 points) to a first-place team finish.

Also for the Gators, Rachel Boorom and Rachel Siemon won the No. 2 doubles title.

Dundee-Crown finished seventh with seven points.

Johnsburg/McHenry Invitational: Nicole Stroner and Alexa Stroner won the No. 1 doubles championship to lead Johnsburg (18 points) to a third-place finish at the eight-team invitational.

Julia Frisbie and Megan Kraft finished second at No. 2 doubles for Woodstock (19.5) which also placed second.

Libertyville won with 28.5 points.

Belvidere North Tournament: Sophomores Ally Fillmore and Amber Fillmore went 3-0 on the day to lead Marengo.

The Indians defeated Woodstock North, 5-0, and lost to Keith and Belvidere North, both by 4-1 scores.

Jacobs Tournament: At Algonquin, the Golden Eagles (27) finished fifth in the eight-team event.
