Marengo surprises, grabs 2nd at BNC MeetBURLINGTON – Burlington Central winning the Big Northern Conference Girls Track and Field Meet on Thursday seemed a foregone conclusion, but second place was very much up for grabs. And a surprising Marengo team was more than happy to be the one grabbing it. Burlington almost doubled the field with 130 points for first. Marengo edged Richmond-Burton for second with 69 points to the Rockets’ 661⁄2. Freshman Allison Rogutich broke the school record and won the triple jump at 36 feet. “That was my best jump this year,” Rogutich said. After the meet, Marengo coach Brian Tveter couldn’t stop smiling, nor could he easily find words to express how happy he was. “My goodness – I’m almost speechless,” Tveter said. “I never expected this. The girls have worked so hard all year, and I couldn’t ask for a better team.” R-B’s Sarah Finley won the 100-meter dash in 12.68 seconds and the 200 in 26.43. Finley also finished second in the long jump at 16-8. “I felt pretty good altogether today,” Finley said. “I came in and was pretty relaxed. Now I’m energized.” Marengo’s Lauren Hunt finished third in the 200 in 27.21. R-B’s Hollis DuBois gave the Rockets another BNC champion with a shot put of 35-21⁄2. “It’s all about technique for me,” DuBois said. “People think throwing is all about strength, but it’s not.” In order to qualify for the IHSA Class 2A Girls Track and Field State Meet, DuBois will have to finish first or second, or throw 36-6 at the Grayslake North Sectional next Friday. “I’m going to keep working hard at it,” she said. |
